I need advice (Title & Steam related)
Hello! I wrote a little devlog because I really need some advice.
I have the message floating over bsky and twitter too, but here I can go in much more detail.
Through the Twitch categories I discovered there's another game called Deep Inside on Steam, published on November 2024 (and it looks pretty cool too). This basically destroyed the chances I can filter playthroughs of my game because they get bundled with this one, and my game is the less popular alternative. The problem is: now we share the category\name on Steam and I was planning to release Deep Inside on it too once I had saved up the sum for the admission fee... and I wanted to announce it at my birthday, on Dec 12
I don't think asking to the author of the game to change the name is an option, I don't want to bring discomfort to anyone, but now I can't use the same name if I upload my game on steam. And I really fear that when I upload it my game will be seen as malicious because of the name.
... what should I do?🥲
The options so far:
- Call the game "Deep Inside: (Insert subtitle here)". I'd appreciate suggestions for the subtitle, I'm not good at this...
- Call the steam edition a fancy name, like what the Pocket Mirror devs did with that game
- Call the game "Wish in the dark" like it was supposed to be named at the start
The problems are:
- Calling it "Deep Inside: Wish in the dark" would be a straight rip-off of the Kamen Rider song I pay homage... it's too much, I fear...
- I can't call it "Deep Inside RPG" because people might think I want to leech off the popularity of the other game
- "Wish in the dark" alone would have the game unrecognizable as a "brand"... not that I have a brand, but it's important the name is recognizable through all the versions.
I really, really need some advice, especially on names. If you read this, please leave a comment.
I haven't played the Deep Inside game on steam yet but if you're curious and want to try it I can share the link!

That's a tough problem, here is my idea I hope it helps. It combines both Deep Inside and the original title which I like very much.
"A Wish Deep Inside the Dark"
Or You could play with the font a little by either bolding and/ or capitalizing "Deep Inside" like "A Wish DEEP INSIDE the Dark." You could change the font for "Deep Inside" as well to highlight it and let people know it's still the game they love and know.
Thank you for the suggestion Cicada!
This is really cool actually! I'll give some thoughts and try to fit it on the titlescreen to see how it looks like! (I'm noting everything down on a notebook)
It's a tough situation, but I think maybe a simple fix like Deep Inside: Steam Edition would work, though I also like Faelels suggestion of "Deep Inside: A Dark Wish" seems like a good compromise between the old title and the current one.
Thank you for the suggestions ZeddyBear!
I'm undecided on the Steam Edition just because while I'm planning to revamp some things, it won't be different from the version here on steam... should I make extra content to call it Steam Edition properly?
I don't think so, I've seen other rpgmaker games release the same as the itchio version on steam and still be "the steam edition", imo the main thing that makes it the steam edition is the fact its on steam.
hmm. it's a toughie. In my opinion Deep Inside definitely needs to stay in the title so it can be found easily. I am Horrible at naming things but maybe some of these ideas will help you think of something
Deep Inside: Steam Edition
Deep Inside : --th Anniversary Edition
Deep Inside: Wishes from the Darkness
Deep Inside : A Dark Wish
Deep Inside: The Dark Truth
Thank you for the suggestions Faelel ;\\\\;
I like both the "5th Anniversary Edition" and "The Dark Truth", I think the second one would be easy to do by tweaking the quote of the title drop in the game a little.
A Dark Wish was proposed by another person too, looks like it's very fitting!
