The 80s References in the Game
You know, nothing shows you're old like having people missing out on the 80s music ;___;
Jokes aside, I saw there's a rising interest (and romanticization) towards the 80s and since the game is set in 1987 I thought to share some of the trivias I included in it! I saw through the gameplays that people had questions about some obscure and confusing one, so I hope you'll enjoy this read. As you may know I was born in the 90s, but late 80s culture shared lots of similarity with my times. I wanted to do it in video format but youtube wouldn't allow me to use the music... if somebody could help me make a video about this I'd be very grateful!

Milli Vanilli & Den Harrow
Milli Vanilli was a band formed by two good looking guys that was all the rage in the 80s: during one of their concerts the speakers malfuctioned and revealed they were both lipsyncing on pre-recorded tracks. Yes, the voice of the singers wasn't theirs.
This was a very common practice in the 80s. In Italy in particular we had a genre called "Italodisco" that involved Italian singers pretending to be French or American and this made them stand out a lot. We had a Milli Vanilli of our own: Den Harrow, famous for Catch the Fox, who lipsynced with Tom Hooker's voice. While Den Harrow still hangs out on reality TV, Tom Hooker reprised his singing career and he's finally enjoying the deserved fame.
The X-Ray Glasses
If you go back to the chemistry lab with Archie he will comment on the X-Ray glasses advertised in the newspapers. In the 80s, especially in Italy, there were curious advertising of (obviously fake) products for pranks. The X-Ray glasses were particularly infamous because they were supposedly capable of removing the clothes of everybody you were looking at from your field of vision. Of course they were fake. And yes, people fell for that. Now you know why Leon is annoyed at the reference and pretends not to see!
The spirit of dark and lonely waters
Lately a cult following of old PSA is resurfacing: they were streamed very frequently on TV back in the day and as a kid in the 90s I was absolutely scared of some of them. When Archie and Leon were kids the spirit of dark and lonely waters was still around and was specifically targeted to children, playing at times when family would gather to watch TV altogether. By today standards it looks very tame, but kids in those days weren't used to see scenes like that on television: nothing like having kids fall to their deaths onscreen!
The four horses of Ben Hur
I don't know if it's an Italian thing, but there are some movies that if you grew up in the 80s or 90s you knew, like they were imbedded in DNA. One of those for Italian kids was Ben Hur, that was streamed every Easter and was considered a cult classic. The titular character had four beautiful white horses for his carriage, all with names of stars: the film was so well known that if you referred to Aldebaran, Altair, Rigel and Antares you could just aswell say the four horses of Ben Hur. That's why Archie recognizes the name Rigel from the movie while being blissfully ignorant of astronomy.
Mice cloning experiment
There's a snippet about this one in the game already, but some extra info here. There were no solid proof that the experiment was conducted to full term (that is, to the mice birth) but back in the day it was pure science fiction coming to reality. I was around when Dolly the sheep was born, and it was such a sensational news that it would be hard to describe today. The rumour though was that not only mice were cloned, but pigs too, and maybe monkeys and maybe... well, who knows.
The fashion: paninari & metallari
I know some would find disappointing and confusing that the characters' clothes look so... plain. The thing is, not everybody was up to date with fashion back in the day (like today): some still wore clothes from the 70s, from their older brothers or adapted from old ones, and this happened in every decade. The young in Italy were divided into two main currents: paninari and metallari. You might have heard the term paninaro from the Pet Shop Boys song (which was actually shot in Italy showing paninari) and that was the look of the rich kids. It was EXTREMELY popularized by television and they had their own culture. Metallari were metalheads instead, and their looks resembled more Archie's outfit (except it should be leather black): back in the day in Italy people wearing those kind of gloves, piercings and earrings were frowned upon.
Giorgio Moroder, Progressive Rock & Dawn of the dead
In the 70s and 80s, Italian cinema was famous for two things: shock horror movies (like Cannibal Holocaust or Mondo Cane) and personalized OST for movies, both American and Italian. Yes, some famous movies like Dawn of the Dead had a different soundtrack in Italy, generally approved by the original director. Dawn of the Dead was known with this soundtrack by Goblin, the progressive rock band behind many horror movies scores here: this is the theme I grew up with. Giorgio Moroder was another composer and he was so popular that he composed music for movies outside of Italy, like Scarface. You KNOW him, you probably just don't remember his name.
...I could probably make a part two based on music alone ahah.
This is all that comes to mind at the moment, but if you have other curiosities please comment down below, so I can add them!
I hope you enjoyed this little trip back to the 80s!
